The Texas City Mission Station

The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in
Texas City was one of thousands who shared the
immediate pain of damage from hurricane Ike.
The storm tore the roof off the educational wing
and rain soaked class rooms, parlor and hall
ways. The damage was significant and at first
overwhelming.
We believe that with difficulties God also offers
opportunities which soon presented themselves.
With the severe damage in Galveston and the
West Bay, our denomination, The Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) needed a mission
station to stage volunteer groups to help rebuild
homes and churches. Our church partnered with
the disaster relief arms of our denomination,
Week of Compassion and Disciples
Volunteering and also with the United Church of
Christ to build a Disciples Mission Station within
the most damaged areas of the church. Two
class rooms were converted to bunk rooms to
sleep up to 24 workers and showers were
installed. A station managers apartment was
added to allow a full time manager to stay on site
for up to six weeks at a time to provide leadership
for the work. Construction has been done by
volunteers from Texas, Virginia, Louisiana,
Kentucky, North Carolina, and Nebraska and with
significant help from Area Churches.

The Future

We anticipate that reconstruction of the most
damaged areas will continue for three to five
years. During that time the Mission Station will
remain open to provide housing, leadership and
tools for volunteers from the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) and The United Church of
Christ from throughout the country. They will be
working closely with organizations in Galveston
County such as GCR2 and as a partner with
many other denominations and church groups
as we join together to rebuild and recover.
A Tradition of Service

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has
a long tradition of service to our fellowman
throughout the world. With the onset of
hurricanes Katrina and Rita a new program was
established to serve long term reconstruction
needs after major disasters. Mission Stations
were set up in Louisiana, Mississippi and
Texas. As other needs arose new stations were
added in locations with tornadoes or floods
such as Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The program took on the slogan “Getting Dirty
for Jesus”.
